Abstract
The primary empty sella syndrome refers to an intrasella herniation of the subarachniod space through a congenital defect of the diaphragm sellae resulting in a remodeling of the sella turcica and flattening of the pituitary glnand.
This anomaly is generally accompanied by normal pituitary function, however, endocrine defects have been described in up to 30% of patients as well as coexistence with hypersecreting pituiary adenoma. In these cases, it has been claimed that
spontanous
infarction of the pituitary gland or a pituitary tumor was reponsible for the formation of the empty sella. Involvement of the posterior pituitary is much rare. We report such two cases in which an empty sella was associated with central diabetes
insipisus. (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 7:66~70, 1992).
